When I was young I read every book at our local library in the Childhood of Famous Americans series. Their pastel covers and line-drawn pictures still linger in my memories. Each book invited you inside the life of a trailblazer in American history. The stories revealed details, showed daily tasks and unfolded the lives of many men and women who discovered, conquered, invented and championed change in our country.
Biographies study people, life and actions, showing insider snapshots and a panorama of accomplishments.
What would we hope to find in a biography of God? The Bible, God's Word, displays a magnificent view of who God is. Exploring His attributes and discovering His handiwork in our lives brings Him into focus. His nature weaves through every story and epistle, revealing Himself in tiny details and majestic power.
Let's take a journey to build our own profile of God so that we can better understand the height of His love and the depth of His grace and how His character frames our lives. Exploration deepens knowledge, influencing our wonder, worship and praise. Come on, let's start building. I'll show you how.
The process is simple but the lessons are profound. First, grab a notebook or the notes app on your phone. We can study any chapter or book in the Bible to highlight God’s qualities, but the Psalms are a great place to start.
Next, we'll select a passage. Start at Psalms 1, and read one chapter a day until the book is finished. Or study a smaller selection for a week or a month. Check out this resource to begin.
As we read, notice the characteristics of God. For example, the verse may list descriptions of Him such as rock, deliverer and fortress. Sometimes we infer His traits from the words in the verse. For example, Psalm 1:2 says, "But his delight is in the law of the Lord." We could conclude that God is our lawgiver.
"The process is simple but the lessons are profound."
Then, write down these traits in a notebook or notes app. My heading says, God is... at the top of the page and each aspect of God appears underneath. Look at this resource to see an example.
Now, let's praise God for His attributes. Choose a favorite on which to focus or praise Him for the whole list. Write the verse and meditate on God's character throughout the day.
Our new-found narrative about God builds a foundation for the storms, a hiding place for fleshly battles and a catapult for a life of praise.
And that's how to build a biography of God, layering His amazing qualities word-by-word. Soon, we'll have a better understanding of who God is and how He is always working in our lives.
