Work, family, friends, church. All relationships can feel sticky at times. Let's turn to Scripture to settle our souls even in the midst of the mess.
Be seated at the table.
Ephesians 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us
sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
We do not have to accept others’ rejection of us. Our identity is in Christ and we can confidently sit at His table. The sting of rejection subsides when we focus on Christ’s unconditional love for us. Our thoughts, words and actions can be rooted in our secure relationship with Him.
Be steady.
1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast,
unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye
know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
God’s Word provides the reliable footing for our sticky situation. Through His counsel we can be open to peaceful relationships while continuing to pray for the circumstance. We must realize that others are watching our reactions and our responsibility is to obey God even if the situation does not change.
See the big picture.
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith;
who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame,
and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Consider pausing and realizing that the situation is not centered on us. What really matters in the long term? Ultimately the big picture is that Jesus needs to be glorified and our goal should be to point others to Him.
4. Stop negativity.
Proverb 3:7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.
Psalm 112:7 He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.
We can shift our thinking patterns to focus on the big picture by avoiding negative thoughts about the situation. Silence the noise by turning towards God’s voice.
5. Shift expectations.
Psalm 62:5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
Even though others may behave with sinful patterns towards us we can replace our focus on their intentions with confidence in God. This simple shift keeps our emotions in check. Then our reactions will stabilize because God is at the center of our expectation and He does not change.
