Does your life seem to zig-zag, turning from one event to another? The Bible provides steady footing for our journey. Follow me. I’ll show you the way.
Hebrews 12:13 says “...and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.” Imagine a path glowing with the light of God’s Word. Debris and undergrowth vanish while a neatly edged trail emerges. Sturdy signs point the way to everlasting victory ahead.
Remove stumbling blocks from the path. “make straight paths for your feet”
My Crocs shoes are infamous for catching on a tile floor and causing me to jolt forward and glance around sheepishly to see if anyone saw my awkward steps. Much like this stilted gait our path can become littered with stumbling blocks. Anything that snatches our attention away from Christ can become a barrier in our relationship with Him.
Proverbs 4:19 shows us that “The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.” We can remember God’s Word and turn toward His light instead of focusing on the rubble that threatens to entangle our thoughts.
Accept weakness as part of the journey. “lest that which is lame be turned out of the way”
In God’s ecosystem weakness breeds strength. Our feebleness is the perfect backdrop for His grace and glory. How can our frailty strengthen our faith in the LORD? When we invite Jesus into our fragile moments, the magnitude of our neediness melts away as we rest in God’s strong, capable arms. Instead of resisting weakness we can allow God to use it to catapult us into a deeper relationship with Him.
2 Corinthians 12:9-10 puts it this way “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
3. Invite healing. “let it rather be healed”
God’s plan is always redemption. When we welcome Him into our messy moments He washes us with the healing balm of His presence. Much like a wound that shows tiny signs of improvement, God mends our broken hearts through the ordinary details of life. We can notice our diminishing reactions and sigh with gratitude at God’s redeeming work in our lives. We can consider God’s presence in a busy moment when we might be tempted to rush through to our next goal. We can take the bold yet simple step of declaring God’s truth to our minds.
Truly our God “healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3).
Do you see the clear path beckoning you? Walk in God’s way. Lay aside the weights and strengthen yourself with the redeeming joy of the LORD.
